Lucid (The Lucid Mysteries)
by Peter Jukes
Release Date: 2012-05-31
30-year-old DS Clare Kavanagh is a rising star working with DI Alan McCrae in the Serious Crimes Squad at Scotland Yard. Methodical and rational, she is the last person one would expect to experience recurrent nightmares: vivid dreams of her own death. When her first real murder case – the killing of a young Bosnian woman Maya by her former-soldier boyfriend Gabriel – uncannily echoes her nightmares, Clare is forced to face the unthinkable: is this a case of déjà vu? Or is her unconscious somehow alerting her to facts that her habitual logic cannot fathom?
Before long, having heard of the psychological techniques of ‘lucid dreaming’ from the psychiatrist Dr Sophie Wilde, Clare discovers aspects of the case that others on her team have missed, in particular threads that connect looting in the Iraq war with the corruption of the London art world. But by following her irrational insights, Clare is drawn deeper into dangerous and murky waters. In the final denouement she discovers that the ultimate victim of the crime she is investigating is none other than herself.
